George Sigurd Hage was born on November 4, 1914 in Madelia, Minnesota. He earned a B.A. in journalism in 1937, a master's degree in 1950 and Ph.D. in 1956 from the University of Minnesota. From 1937-1942, Dr. Hage worked as a reporter and critic for the Columbus (Ohio) Citizen.
